We’re back with some more planning advice, with spring-like weather in sight, we’re thinking about planning your special day on private property, and the challenges that come with it. Here are just a few things to consider:

1. Power: more often than not, couples think that with having a few dedicated power lines and plugging into one side of a property they are in the clear. Next thing you know the coffee turns on and the lights go out. Simple things like coffee urns and tent lighting can really impact the power draw to an area. Do you research and book a generator!

2. Permitting: just because you know the property inside and out, doesn’t mean you know its locations’ zoning. Are you sitting on unharvested farmland? If so you might be facing a noise bi-law or building permit. Look into what hosting on your private property might mean and obtain the appropriate permits to avoid a salty neighbour shutting your day down.

3. Plan for Plan B: while we’d all love to think Mother Nature is always on our side, reality says weather can’t be predicted. Plan to have an appropriate plan B for your outdoor ceremony and reception under the stars and ensure it can accommodate all of your guests. Be practical to avoid disappointment.

4. Budget appropriately: we might think that because we’re planning at home, it will inherently be cheaper. This is often not the case. With everything that comes with planning, catering equipment, permits, power, transportation, and much more, you want to make sure your private property plan accounts for an appropriate budget.

Wedding planning, whether locally or in destination, can be stressful. Read a snippet below from one of our clients how we lighten the load:

“Our journey with Shana began about two years ago, pre pandemic, when a family friend who had also worked with Shana for their own wedding, recommended her to us. Little did we know that we were about to have a long, turbulent wedding planning ride from there! Planning a wedding can be stressful as is, but then you throw in COVID-19 and a huge four event Indian ceremony- and things can get very interesting. Dream Weaver Events committed to making our special day everything we dreamed of and more. For all the times we felt uneasy or found ourselves second guessing our decision to move forward with a destination wedding in Riviera Maya, Mexico during peak pandemic chaos, Shana and her team reassured us and stuck with our vision. Not only did she remain super organized through out and readily available to answer any questions, but even upon getting to our location- her and Sydney constantly made it a point to fulfill our needs and our guests needs first. Shana literally went fabric shopping, one week prior to our wedding, and video called me having found the perfect color I wanted! I was blown away at her willingness to want to deliver! Over all, we actually ended up having to postpone our wedding for an entire year due to the pandemic and although it was a very difficult decision, Shana’s work ethic never strayed from the task at hand. She was prepared for every meeting or zoom call, and her uplifting and positive attitude is probably what kept us afloat during some very trying times. She is extremely professional, great at budget management, honest, and she will absolutely go to bat for her couples when necessary!! 1. Budget and budget in two phases. Your ideal budget and your top end budget. We see all too often when couples get stuck making decisions before properly setting a budget and end up financially stressed with the remainder of their planning. Your wedding is one special day of the rest of your live- properly setting your budget can set you up to not go into your lives with financial burden.

2. Set the formality; and I’m not talking “black tie”. I’m talking about having the conversations about what style of wedding you’ll have. Do you hate a buffet? Are you open to brunch stations? Do you want to allow plus ones? Are children allowed? Talking about formality will set the tone for all of the remaining planning decisions.

3. Guest list - here’s the somewhat hard part. Setting a guest list can only really come after you’ve set your budget and formality, but has to happen before much else to dictate how much space you’ll have. Is everyone invited to both ceremony and reception? Will you make a, dare I say, B list? A wedding really only needs 5 people total, yourselves, an Officiant and two witnesses, everyone else is totally up to you!

This past season we had the absolute pleasure of working with the GTHA’s beloved @merryfarms family for their daughter Abbey’s wedding. The family came to us to help them navigate what a wedding could look like on their property and to execute their vision.

The ceremony took place in a beautiful forest clearing, with the cocktail hour and reception taking place at their iconic red barn.

When you hire a planner, they should get to know you as individuals and as a couple and encourage ideas for your wedding that will represent the people you are.

We are thrilled when a couple can be open to our ideas and collaborative in the process - a planners’ dream.

For this statement piece, we pitched something that would highlight Fi’s love of colour and a little bit of whimsy and Jay’s love of precise graphic design. They also LOVE to travel and had done so much of it as a couple. Doubling as an escort card and a wedding favour, we searched the internet for various colours of luggage tags that would match their design and were quality pieces their guests could use. We also had to make sure the sticker with their name could be removed so the tag could be used without a table number on it ;) Our graphic designer groom Jay went to work on the right fonts and sizing, and the finished product was so stunning, so interactive and so representative of them.

Your wedding should be so uniquely you, a perfect enveloped package of all of the details that make each of you who you are as individuals and also as a couple. During our design process, the questions we ask, the designs we present always strive to intertwine all of those details. What you’re looking at in these photos from H+S big day at @erinestate is moments from all of those little details.

1. Steve wrote a book of poetry for Hope while they dated. We wove that poetry into the day.
2. One of those poems used to welcome guests (the rich shade of blue? Steve’s favourite colour that they didn’t want to be too overpowering in the wedding)
3. Hope’s love for flowers woven directly into her crown to match her dress.
4. The couple loves chess and colour; we hand painted mini chess pieces to use as their seating cards.
5. Hope adores listening to Steve play the piano, she mentioned it being a source of complete calm to her in chaos. We brought a piano to the venue so that during overwhelming moments, Steve could play and they could escape but still be present.
6. Some more poetry for guests to enjoy (there’s that blue again)
7. Oh, they wanted their guests entertained 😏 our first wedding with the amazing @thehighbarexperience (and hopefully not last!)
8. At closer glance of the couple together, you’ll notice the colour of his bow tie down to his shoes match the crown of her hair to the tip of her braid.
